Husk Preservation working with millwright Jim Kricker, completed an extensive millwrighting maintenance campaign on this historic grist mill, addressing critical components of the waterpower, gearing, bearing, and milling systems.
Work included cleaning, inspecting, and lubricating bearings throughout the mill using food-safe lubricants; leveling and adjusting the bed millstone and associated milling machinery; correcting gear alignment and mesh between the face gear and wallower; centering and rewedging the water wheel shaft gudgeons; tightening and securing loose wedges throughout; and repairing components of the gate control system.
The project required lifting and rigging the water wheel shaft, fabricating and installing new custom ipe hardwood gudgeon wedges, correcting wear and alignment issues, and making numerous adjustments to improve mill operation, maintainability, and longevity. The work also included test-running the mill, troubleshooting operational issues, and providing maintenance recommendations to staff.
